Description

This rectangular steel curtain fire damper is designed to stop the spread of fire through ducts, walls, floors and ceilings, maintaining the integrity of fire compartmentation. It uses a folding pack of interlocking, ribbed steel blades that are held folded in the open position against constant-force springs by a fusible link. On a fire condition the link melts, allowing the springs to drive the blade pack closed automatically. Operation is fully mechanical, with no electric actuator.

The standard fusible link is rated at 72°C (162°F), fitted as standard unless otherwise specified. On dampers 150mm and above in height or diameter, test release can be carried out from either side of the damper using the fusible link assembly and bottom-blade ring-pull arrangement; on dampers below 150mm, release testing is only possible from the side opposite the locking ramp. The damper case is fully welded, and all welds are cleaned and finished with a commercial-grade water-based protective paint.

Each damper is made to order to your exact width × height in millimetre increments, from a minimum of 100mm x 100mm up to a maximum single-section size of 1200mm wide x 1000mm high, and is suitable for both vertical and horizontal installation. It is available with an Angle Frame (AF) or HEVAC Frame installation method, in galvanised steel or 430-grade stainless steel, with support cleats available as an optional accessory.

How does a curtain fire damper work?

The damper holds a folding pack of interlocking, ribbed steel blades open against constant-force springs using a fusible link. In a fire, the link’s alloy melts at 72°C and the springs drive the blade pack closed automatically, sealing the duct. Operation is fully mechanical — there is no electric actuator and no wiring required.

What fire rating does it achieve?

The damper achieves an E 120 classification — 120 minutes’ fire integrity — tested to BS EN 1366-2 and classified to BS EN 13501-3, across all tested installation methods. It is manufactured to the fire damper product standard BS EN 15650, with blade leakage Class 2 to BS EN 1751. Tested installations cover masonry and blockwork walls, dry partition walls and concrete floors.

What is the difference between the AF and HEVAC frame options?

They are two tested installation methods. The Angle Frame (AF) version uses perimeter angles to fix the damper into the structural opening, while the HEVAC frame version has a flanged frame to suit the traditional HEVAC-style builders’ work installation. Choose whichever matches your project’s installation detail — the fire performance classification is the same for both.

When do I need a fire and smoke damper instead of a fire damper?

A fire damper resists the passage of fire and closes thermally at 72°C. Where the design also requires cold smoke to be stopped — for example protecting escape routes or areas with sleeping risk — an ES-classified fire and smoke damper with a spring-return actuator is used, closing on a signal from the smoke detection system. Check your project’s fire strategy to confirm which is specified.

What sizes and materials are available?

Each damper is made to order to your exact width and height in millimetre increments, from 100mm x 100mm up to a maximum single-section size of 1200mm wide x 1000mm high. It is suitable for vertical or horizontal installation and available in galvanised steel or 430-grade stainless steel. Optional support cleats can be added at the checkout.

Can the damper be tested after installation?

Yes. On dampers 150mm and above in height, test release can be carried out from either side using the fusible link assembly and the bottom-blade ring-pull arrangement. On dampers below 150mm, release testing is only possible from the side opposite the locking ramp. Routine inspection and testing should follow your building’s fire strategy and maintenance programme.

This item is made to order and therefore not eligible for a return under our returns policy, unless faulty (see below).

Faulty Items

If you receive a faulty or damaged item, please let us know as soon as possible — ideally within 48 hours of delivery, so we can claim against the courier on your behalf. We will arrange a free collection and send a replacement or issue a full refund. This does not affect your statutory rights.
