Types of Ventilation Fans

Inline Fans

Inline fans (also called duct fans or tube fans) mount within the ductwork run rather than at the point of extraction. This allows the fan to be positioned remotely — for example in a ceiling void or plant room — reducing noise at the grille. Inline fans are the most versatile type and are suitable for domestic, commercial, and light industrial ventilation. Case Fans

Case fans (also called box fans or cabinet fans) are enclosed in an insulated casing for noise reduction. They are commonly used in commercial applications where the fan is mounted in an accessible location such as a ceiling void and noise levels must be kept low. The insulated casing also provides thermal protection when handling warm air.

Plate Fans

Plate fans (also called panel fans or wall fans) are designed for direct wall or panel mounting where ductwork is not required. They provide high-volume airflow for through-wall ventilation in kitchens, factories, workshops, and agricultural buildings. Available in standard and fire-rated versions for kitchen extraction applications.

Choosing the Right Fan

The key specifications to consider when selecting a fan are:

  • Airflow rate — measured in litres per second (l/s) or cubic metres per hour (m³/h). This must match or exceed the ventilation requirement for your space.
  • Static pressure — the resistance the fan must overcome from ductwork, bends, filters, and grilles. Longer duct runs and more fittings require a fan with higher pressure capability.
  • Noise level — measured in dB(A). Critical for offices, retail, and residential applications.
  • Temperature rating — standard fans handle ambient air up to 40°C. Kitchen extraction fans must be rated to 300°C or 400°C for fire safety compliance.

What size fan do I need for my room?

Fan sizing depends on the room volume and the required number of air changes per hour. For example, a kitchen typically needs 15-30 air changes/hour, while an office needs 6-10. What is the difference between an inline fan and a plate fan?

An inline fan mounts within the ductwork and moves air through a connected duct system. A plate fan mounts directly on a wall or panel and exhausts air straight through without ductwork. Inline fans are quieter at the point of extraction and more versatile; plate fans are simpler to install for direct through-wall ventilation.

Do kitchen extract fans need to be fire rated?

Yes. UK Building Regulations require kitchen extraction fans in commercial kitchens to be rated for continuous operation at elevated temperatures — typically 300°C for 1 hour or 400°C for 2 hours. This ensures the fan continues extracting smoke and hot gases in a fire. We stock fire-rated fans from S&P and other manufacturers.

How can I reduce fan noise?

Use a larger fan running at a lower speed rather than a small fan at full speed. Install flexible connections between the fan and ductwork to absorb vibration.
