Wire rope suspension is a fast, flexible alternative to threaded rod for hanging lighter ventilation components — thread the wire through or around the item, set the height, and lock it off with a clutcher. It is especially handy where soffit heights vary or where you would otherwise be cutting dozens of rods to length.

Wire Rope Duct Suspension
Wire rope suspension (also called catenary wire suspension) is a lightweight, fast-to-install method of hanging services from ceilings and soffits. Originally popularised for cable tray and containment systems, wire rope is now widely used for suspending small to medium-diameter ductwork in offices, retail units, and commercial interiors where a clean, minimal aesthetic is preferred over bulky channel and rod.
How Wire Rope Suspension Works
A galvanised steel wire rope (typically 2 mm or 3 mm diameter) is fixed to the ceiling structure at one end using a drop-in anchor, toggle, or beam clamp with an integral wire attachment. The wire hangs vertically or at an angle to a gripper or adjustable fitting that connects to a duct support cradle or clip. The gripper allows the height to be adjusted easily by sliding the wire through and locking it at the desired position.
Components
Wire Rope
7×7 or 7×19 construction galvanised steel wire in 2 mm and 3 mm diameters. Supplied on reels for cutting to length on site. 2 mm wire is adequate for duct diameters up to approximately 200 mm; 3 mm wire handles loads up to about 315 mm diameter.
Adjustable Wire Grippers
Spring-loaded or cam-lock grippers that clamp onto the wire and allow infinite height adjustment without tools. Simply squeeze the gripper to slide it along the wire, then release to lock in position. This makes levelling ductwork fast and precise.
Ceiling Anchors and Fixings
Drop-in anchors for concrete, toggle fixings for hollow ceilings, and beam clamps for steelwork. Each has an integral loop or hook for attaching the wire rope. Choose the fixing type to suit your ceiling construction.
Duct Cradles and Clips
Y-cradles and wrap-around clips that attach to the lower end of the wire and support the duct from below. Available in sizes to suit standard spiral duct diameters. Some designs incorporate a rubber insert to prevent the duct rattling against the metal clip.
Advantages of Wire Rope
- Speed — faster to install than threaded rod and channel; no cutting, threading, or levelling nuts
- Aesthetics — the thin wire is far less visually intrusive than heavy rod and channel, ideal for exposed services installations
- Adjustability — gripper mechanisms allow quick height changes during and after installation
- Weight — wire rope systems are significantly lighter than rod and channel, reducing load on the ceiling structure
Limitations
Wire rope is suitable for lighter loads only. For duct diameters above approximately 315 mm, or where ducts carry heavy inline components (dampers, silencers), threaded rod with split clips or trapeze hangers is the recommended support method per DW/144.

What diameter ductwork can wire rope support?
Wire rope is suitable for lighter, smaller-diameter ductwork, typically up to about 250-315mm depending on the wire diameter and duct contents. For larger or heavier ducts, threaded rod with split clips or trapeze hangers is recommended per DW/144 guidelines.
How far apart should wire rope supports be spaced?
Follow the same maximum spacing intervals as for other support types: 1.5-2.0 metres for small ducts, as specified by DW/144. Wire rope supports may need to be closer together than rigid rod supports because the wire allows more lateral movement under load.
Can wire rope be used for exposed ductwork in restaurants and offices?
Yes, wire rope is an excellent choice for exposed services installations because the thin wire is far less visually intrusive than traditional threaded rod and channel. It gives the ductwork a clean, modern floating appearance that suits industrial-chic and contemporary interiors.
