Where is bespoke rectangular ducting used?

Rectangular ductwork earns its keep where round duct will not fit: shallow ceiling voids, boxed-in bulkheads, plant rooms with tight clearances, and connections to air handling units with rectangular spigots. Pairing bespoke rectangular sections with standard spiral ducting and fittings — using a square-to-round transformer at the changeover — usually gives the most economical system: run spiral where there is room, and go rectangular only where you must.

Measuring up for bespoke ductwork

Work from internal duct dimensions (width x height) and note which way the duct sits — a 400mm x 200mm duct is not the same part as 200mm x 400mm once bends and offsets are involved. For bends, decide whether the turn happens on the flat or on the edge of the duct, and whether a radius or squared throat fits the void. For transformers and reducers, capture both end sizes and the length available for the transition. The configurator drawing makes all of this visual, so mistakes surface on screen rather than on site.
