Description

The Volume Control Damper is a multi-blade balancing damper designed to regulate and balance airflows in low to medium velocity heating and ventilation systems. It can be installed in either the vertical or horizontal position to suit ducted systems. The blades operate with an opposed blade action for accurate, progressive flow control, and the steel drive linkage is located out of the airflow to minimise turbulence and noise.

The damper features 50mm wide roll formed steel blades fitted with composite end caps and 12.5mm diameter nylon spindles running in extruded bearings. A fitted cover on the drive side keeps migrating dust and dirt out of the blade bearings and drive mechanism. Construction is DW144 compliant, with the case designed to achieve case leakage Classes A, B and C to DW144 2016, Eurovent 2/2 and BS EN 1751. Under normal operating conditions (not exceeding 1000Pa), Classes A and B of the DW144 2016 Specification apply.

Choose between a Flangefit casing (65mm deep, mechanically fixed, with 30mm flanges and universal corner fixing slots) or a Spigotfit casing (85mm fully welded). Both are available in galvanised mild steel or 430-grade stainless steel. A full range of control options is offered: hand quadrant control (a lockable quadrant allowing infinite adjustment of airflow), an extended spindle for motorisation, or a factory-fitted 24V or 230V actuator.

Every damper is made to order to your exact requirements, with bespoke sizing available in 1mm increments from 100mm up to 1000mm square or rectangular.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a volume control damper used for?

A volume control damper regulates and balances airflow in low to medium velocity heating and ventilation ductwork. The multiple blades operate with an opposed blade action, giving accurate, progressive control as the damper closes. Typically one is fitted in each branch of a system and set during commissioning so every room or outlet receives its designed share of the air. It can be installed vertically or horizontally.

What is the difference between Flangefit and Spigotfit?

Flangefit dampers have a 65mm deep, mechanically fixed casing with 30mm flanges and universal corner fixing slots, for bolting to flanged rectangular ductwork. Spigotfit dampers have an 85mm fully welded case that fits inside the duct. Choose whichever matches how your ductwork is connected — the price and blade design are otherwise the same style of damper.

Which control options are available?

Four options: a lockable hand quadrant for infinite manual adjustment; an extended spindle so a motor or actuator can be fitted by others; or a factory-fitted 24V or 230V electric actuator. Each control option is listed as its own product — use the selector on the product page to switch between connection, material and control combinations.

How do I order a custom size, and which dimension do I enter?

Every damper is made to order to your exact width and height, in 1mm increments from 100mm up to 1000mm, square or rectangular. Enter the flange size for Flangefit units or the spigot size for Spigotfit units — the size fields on the product page are labelled accordingly. The price updates automatically as you enter your dimensions.

What materials and standards does the damper meet?

The case and 50mm roll-formed steel blades are available in galvanised mild steel or 430-grade stainless steel. Construction is DW144 compliant, with the case designed to achieve leakage Classes A, B and C to DW144 2016, Eurovent 2/2 and BS EN 1751. Normal operating pressure is up to 1000Pa, with an operating temperature range of 0°C to +70°C.

Is a volume control damper a fire damper?

No. A volume control damper is for balancing airflow only and has no fire rating. Where ductwork passes through fire-rated walls or floors you need a tested fire damper, or a fire and smoke damper where smoke control is also required. We offer both in rectangular and circular formats — see our Fire Dampers and Fire/Smoke Dampers ranges.
