Description

This rectangular fire and smoke damper is a combined fire and smoke control device for HVAC ductwork, designed to maintain compartmentation and protect means of escape in the event of fire. Driven by a spring-return electric actuator, the damper responds to a smoke alarm signal for closure at the first trace of smoke and incorporates a thermal fuse as a failsafe backup. The actuator closes the damper automatically on loss of power, or when the thermal fuse reaches its operating temperature of 72°C.

The damper is CE marked complying with the requirements of BS EN 15650, fire tested to BS EN 1366-2 and classified to BS EN 13501-3. It achieves an ES classification with reduced smoke leakage characteristics, making it suitable for the protection of escape routes and areas with sleeping risk, and is compliant with Approved Document B. Tested and certified installation methods cover masonry/blockwork walls, dry partition walls and concrete floors, achieving a classification of E120 (ve i↔o) S in vertical constructions and E120 (ho i↔o) S in concrete floors.

Construction is a fully welded 1.2mm case available in galvanised steel or 430-grade (1.4016) ferritic stainless steel, with a choice of Angle Frame (AF) or HEVAC Frame (HF) installation method. The opposed-blade action uses double-skinned airfoil blades on 19mm diameter spindles, with the blade drive linkage fully enclosed and outside the airstream for protection and increased free area. A spring-return actuator is fitted as standard in your choice of 24V or 230V, and optional support cleats are available. Each damper is made to order to your exact width and height requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a fire and smoke damper do that a fire damper doesn't?

It combines fire resistance with smoke control. The damper carries an ES classification — reduced smoke leakage characteristics — so it can close at the first trace of smoke on a signal from the smoke detection system, rather than waiting for heat. That makes it suitable for protecting escape routes and areas with sleeping risk, in compliance with Approved Document B.

Does it need an actuator?

Yes — a spring-return electric actuator is fitted as standard on every unit, in your choice of 24V or 230V. The actuator holds the damper open in normal operation and drives it closed automatically on loss of power, on a smoke alarm signal, or when the integral thermal fuse reaches 72°C. Spring closure takes under 30 seconds; motored opening takes under 60 seconds.

What fire classification does it achieve?

The damper is CE marked to BS EN 15650, fire tested to BS EN 1366-2 and classified to BS EN 13501-3. It achieves E120 (ve i↔o) S in vertical constructions and E120 (ho i↔o) S in concrete floors — 120 minutes with smoke leakage control. Tested installation methods cover masonry and blockwork walls, dry partition walls and concrete floors.

How is it constructed and what options are there?

Construction is a fully welded 1.2mm case in galvanised steel or 430-grade stainless steel, with a choice of Angle Frame (AF) or HEVAC frame installation methods. The opposed-blade action uses double-skinned airfoil blades on 19mm spindles, with the drive linkage fully enclosed outside the airstream. Case leakage is Class C and blade leakage Class 2, both to BS EN 1751.

What sizes can I order?

Every damper is made to order to your exact width and height, from 100mm x 100mm up to 1000mm x 1000mm in a single section. Enter your dimensions on the product page for an instant price, and add optional support cleats if your installation detail requires them. As a made-to-order item, please allow the lead time shown on the page.

How does the damper connect to the fire alarm system?

The spring-return actuator is designed to respond to the building’s smoke detection system and closes automatically whenever its power supply is interrupted, with the 72°C thermal fuse acting as a failsafe backup. Control wiring and interfacing should be designed and installed by a competent person in line with the project’s fire strategy and cause-and-effect requirements.
